New Battleground Polling Finds Kamala Harris with Strengthened and Consolidated Lead Among Latino Voters, Increased Excitement And Clear Path to Expand Support

Kamala Leads Trump in Support by Battleground State Latino Voters, Highest Levels of Support by Latinas and Young Latinos

Washington, DC (August 5, 2024) – Today, as first reported by The New Republic, Somos PAC released the results of a recent poll conducted by BSP Research to measure battleground state Latino voter support for Kamala Harris. 

The results found that since joining the presidential race, Vice President Kamala Harris has solidified a strong lead among Latinos voters in key battleground states against opponent Republican Donald Trump and has a clear path to earn the support of an even larger share of Latino voters. Increased approval ratings and increased enthusiasm among Latinos higher among women and younger Latinos. When it comes to possible candidates for Harris’s running mate, there is support from Latino voters for top contenders with high levels of curiosity among voters eager to learn more about them.

This is the largest polling of battleground Latino voters to come out measuring Latino voter support for the current presidential nominees, Vice President Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

ISSUES

Economic issues remain top of mind for Latino voters – which has been a consistent finding across all of Somos’ research. When asked to choose the top 3 issues they want their elected officials to address: 

- Costs are a major concern with inflation topping the list of important issues (63% of all respondents); Inflation was followed by Jobs (35%), Housing Costs (30%) Health Care costs (20%); 

While the Economy is paramount, other important issues include: 

- Abortion rights (20%), Gun violence (19%) and Immigration reform for current immigrants (16%), with Border enforcement (14%), Homelessness (12%), and Climate change (10%).

JOB APPROVAL and FAVORABILITY

Job Approval: On Presidential job approval, the majority of Latinos approve of President Biden’s time in office  (52-48). Trump’s retroactive job approval rating is net -6 (47-53). 

Favorability: Vice President Harris is popular with Latinos, with a +25 overall favorability rating (58-33), reflecting a higher favorability ceiling for a Democratic Presidential Nominee than previous polls with room for even more growth seen in in-poll movement. Additionally, the Vice President’s net popularity is 40% higher than Trump, who has a -16 favorability rating (39-55). 

- Vice President Harris’s favorability is +14 in Arizona (54-40) and +44 in  NV (69-25) – a significant improvement over surveys earlier in the cycle. 

- Vice President Harris receives positive approval from both Latinos (+14) and  Latinas (+34). 

- Additionally, Vice President Harris receives even higher positive approval from Young Latinos, age 29 and under, with approval ratings of +21 with young Latino men and +47 for young Latina women.

VOTE CHOICE

Vice President Harris begins the poll in a strong position, she’s +18 with initial vote choice at 55% Harris to 37% Trump in a 2-way matchup. This includes winning a majority of Latino men (+6), Latina women (+28). Additionally, she wins a majority of Young Latino Men (+6) and has her strongest support Young Latina Women (+35). 

Through the course of the poll, Vice President Harris’ support increased to +25 (59% Harris to 34% Trump), showing that she has not yet met her ceiling with Latino voters in this race.. 

A NEW PRESIDENTIAL RACE

President Biden’s decision to decline the nomination has changed the landscape. We are seeing increased enthusiasm across many segments of the electorate (although notably, not among Republicans). Vice President Harris enters this race in a strong position with Latino Voters. This poll shows the Vice President has meaningfully consolidated Latino support as well as a path to earn even higher percentages of our community. More than ⅓ of voters expressed increased excitement to vote and another 27% report that they will vote for the Democrat no matter who the nominee is. Only 10% report less interest in voting for Democrats.

The biggest excitement effects are in the “Lean” Democrat category, suggesting a significant consolidation moment.
