WASHINGTON, D.C. — After economic indicators showed cratering consumer sentiment, declining small business confidence, and the potential for an economic recession, President Trump announced broad tariffs that will raise the cost of groceries, cars and trucks, and more for working people.
“Instead of liberating hard working families, Trump is making them pay for reckless economic policies that will line the pockets of his billionaire buddies,” said Melissa Morales, founder and president of Somos Votantes. “Hard working Latinos want lower prices, and instead, President Trump is shuttering Social Security offices and making it harder to afford essentials – all while giving another tax giveaway to the ultra-wealthy. Latinos are already feeling the squeeze of high prices, and today's announcement will only make it worse.”
In March, Somos Votantes released a poll reflecting deep economic anxieties felt by Latinos across the country. Economic issues are at the forefront of Latino voters’ minds, with 67% rating the U.S. economy as poor and only 14% saying they live comfortably. The poll also showed that Latino voters view Trump’s economic record as a significant liability: 63% believe he prioritizes the wealthy over working families, and his handling of the economy has resulted in a net -13 disapproval rating.
